The artist-village Worpswede is located in the "Teufelsmoor" (only in german language) about 25 km north-east of Bremen (about 10.000 inhabitants live on an area of 7,613 hectars) and has beside numerous galleries and museums many other attractions (the old station, Barkenhoff, Buddha, house of Schluh, cheese bell, Mackensen-oak, mill, Niedersachsenstein, Weyerberg).

Worpswede is the "creative village" of Germany, in which the first artists came more than 100 years ago (1889). The most famous painter was Paula Modersohn-Becker (100th death anniversary was on November 20, 2007 - she was born 8.2.1876 in Dresden and died 20.11.1907 in Worpswede) - one of the most important representatives of early expressionism.

Since 13.10.2007 (-24.02.2008) you can see many of her paintings in the "Kunsthalle Bremen" (www.paula-in-paris.de).

Also Heinrich Vogeler (1872-1942) and Fritz Mackensen (1866-1953) brought fame to the small town (the breakthrough came in 1895 with the painting-exhibition in the "Glass Palace" of Munich / Germany) and made out of an old moor-village a "village of the art world", which now has become a popular vacation-resort, which is visted during the whole year by tourists from all over the world.

Other well-known artists (not ranked) from Worpswede are: Hans am Ende, Fritz Overbeck, the author Rainer Maria Rilke, the sculptor Clara Westhoff, Walter Bertelsmann, Udo Peters, Albert Schiestl, Karl Krummacher etc.

Well known is also the architect Bernhard Hoetger: In Bremen he created the Böttcherstraße in which today you´ll find the Paula Modersohn-Becker-museum (see below trips - only in german language). In Worpswede Hoetger built the "Cafe Worpswede" (today a famous gourmet restaurant - for more information see here - only in german - or in pubs / restaurants and cafes - only in german language), which was named by the people "Café Crazy", the private home of Hoetger in the street "Hinterm Berg" (behind the mountain) and the Niedersachsenstein at the Weyerberg (54,4 meters high and in winter the "center of ski-activities" !).
